Dog First Aid Basics and Emergency Preparation

First aid is a bridge to veterinary care

Pet first aid can help protect a dog while you arrange professional care, but it is not a substitute for diagnosis or treatment. The most useful preparation happens before an emergency: know where you would go, how you would transport your dog and what information the clinic will need.

Build an emergency plan

1. Save your regular veterinarian and nearest emergency clinic in your phone.
2. Keep a secure lead, carrier or other suitable restraint accessible.
3. Know how you would safely lift and transport your dog if movement is painful.
4. Keep medication names, allergies and important medical history easy to find.
5. Have a backup transport plan for nights, weekends and holidays.

Useful first-aid-kit basics

• Gauze, non-stick dressings and self-adhering bandage material.
• Disposable gloves, clean towels and blunt-ended scissors.
• Saline for simple rinsing where appropriate.
• A spare lead and a muzzle suitable for emergency handling if your dog can safely wear one.
• A written card with veterinary, emergency and poison-control contact details.

Signs that need urgent help

Emergency signs can include difficulty breathing, collapse, uncontrolled bleeding, severe trauma, seizures that continue or repeat, a swollen painful abdomen, suspected poisoning, inability to urinate, or marked weakness. When in doubt, phone a veterinary clinic and describe what you are seeing.
